What is a writing test?

A writing test for hiring measures how well a candidate gets a message across in writing: whether they answer what was asked, organise it so a reader can follow, and use the grammar, vocabulary and conventions the situation calls for. Evalingo's runs online from a link. The candidate writes two answers in the browser against a clock, and AI scores the text against the CEFR scale from A1 to C2.

A CV, a cover letter and a take-home exercise all show writing the candidate had unlimited time and help with. A timed test with pasting switched off shows what they produce on their own, at the speed the job asks for, which is the writing a customer or a colleague will actually receive.

What the candidate does

2 tasks in 2 sections, about 15 minutes of writing. Each task is drawn at random from a library inside a fixed structure, and each has its own clock.

Writing

about 15 minutes
Casual WritingProfessional Writing

A short everyday message, then a longer structured piece scored for organisation as well as accuracy. Pasting is switched off for every candidate.

Total timed: 15 minutes.

Casual Writing
A short everyday message, such as an email or a reply to a colleague, in 5 minutes. It shows whether someone can be clear, complete and suitably friendly at speed.
Professional Writing
A longer structured piece in 10 minutes, where the candidate has to plan, make a case and hold a more formal register. It is marked for organisation as well as accuracy.
Pasting is off
Nobody can paste or drop text into an answer, whether or not the assessment is monitored, and every candidate is told so before they start.
Length is checked
Where a task asks for a length, an answer far short of it is flagged, and the result says how many words were written against how many were asked for.
Right to left where needed
In Arabic the questions and the answer box run right to left from the first keystroke, rather than flipping direction partway through a sentence.
Extra time when needed
An employer can grant 25%, 50% or 100% extra time as an accommodation when ordering. Each limit stretches and rounds up to a whole minute.

Five things it scores

Each dimension is a fifth of the result and comes back as its own score, so a writer who is accurate but disorganised looks different from one who is organised but careless.

Task response
Whether the answer does what was asked, covering every part of the task.
Organisation
Logical structure, paragraphing, and the flow from one point to the next.
Vocabulary
Range and precision, and whether the words suit the reader and the context.
Grammar
Accuracy, sentence variety, and how much complexity the candidate can control.
Conventions
Spelling, punctuation and formatting.

Who needs a writing test

Roles that commonly need it

  • chat and email support agents
  • customer success managers
  • account managers
  • administrators
  • sales development representatives
  • content moderators

Any role that writes to customers or colleagues needs a writing level, and chat and email support need it most: every message an agent sends is a small piece of public writing with your name on it.

Speaking and writing come apart more often than people expect: someone fluent in conversation can be unsure on the page, and someone who learned from books can write well and speak haltingly. That is why the two are scored separately, and at about 15 minutes this one is a small ask for a role where writing is most of the job.

What comes back

A CEFR level from A1 to C2, a score on each of the five dimensions, and written notes on what went well and where the writing fell short, usually within minutes of the last answer.

The full text of each answer stays on the result page beside its scores, so a level you want to check can be checked against the writing itself. An answer that was not a real attempt, such as a few words or a reply in another language, gets "Not assessable" and the reason instead of a level.

What went well

Covered every point the task asked for in a clear order, with a register that suited a message to a manager.

Opportunities

Article use was inconsistent, and the longer piece leaned on the same two linking words throughout, though neither ever obscured the meaning.

Questions people ask

How long does a writing test take?
About 15 minutes of writing: 5 minutes for a short message and 10 for a longer professional piece. With a short introduction to each section it is 15 to 16 minutes in all.
How is a writing test scored?
AI reads each answer and scores it on task response, organisation, vocabulary, grammar and conventions, against a rubric written to the CEFR level descriptions, with its reasoning attached. Guardrails flag answers that are far too short, repetitive or meaningless, and answers that try to instruct the scorer instead of doing the task.
Can candidates paste in an answer from ChatGPT?
No. Pasting and dropping text into an answer are blocked for every candidate. With integrity checks turned on, the report also records attempts to paste, a paragraph appearing in a single edit and time spent away from the test, as observations for a person to weigh rather than a verdict. Nothing in a browser can stop someone retyping from a second device, which is why those observations exist.
Which languages can the writing test be taken in?
13: English, Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, Italian, Chinese (Mandarin), Japanese, Korean, Arabic, Russian, Dutch, Swedish. Each language has its own question library, and all of them report on the same CEFR scale, so a B2 means the same thing whichever language it was written in.
What writing level should a role require?
B2 is the usual bar for writing directly to customers, such as chat or email support: clear, accurate enough not to distract, and able to adjust tone to the reader. B1 suits internal messages and structured forms, and C1 is worth asking for where the written wording carries risk, such as complaints, contracts or client reporting.
Can we use our own writing tasks?
Yes. You can write your own question library per language, for example one per role, and choose for each assessment whether it draws from yours or from our standard library. Task types and time limits stay fixed, so a level from your library means the same as one from ours.
Can the writing test be combined with other skills?
Speaking and writing can be ordered together as one assessment of about 20 minutes, or each on its own. Reading and listening are a separate assessment, available in English and German. Every skill reports on the same CEFR scale.
How much does a writing test cost?
From $0.60 a test on annual billing, the same in every language, with no setup fee and no per-seat licence. You can start free with ten assessments and no card.
